He worked at the Perkins School for the Blind for three years, and earned an M.F.A. from Cornell University, where he was twice co-winner of the Arthur Lynn Prize in Fiction. He has received grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Saltonstall Foundation, and was awarded a Stegner Fellowship by Stanford University (declined). He has worked as a housepainter, teacher, editor and journalist, was associate editor and staff writer at\u00a0<em>Cornell Magazine<\/em>, where he twice won CASE awards for articles; and has taught at Cornell, Ithaca College, Hobart and William Smith Colleges and the Colgate Writing Seminars, and in Auburn Prison. His published novels include\u00a0<em>The Stolen Child<\/em>\u00a0(Baskerville, 1995),\u00a0<em>Eyes Like Mine<\/em>\u00a0(Baskerville, 1996),\u00a0<em>So Far Gone\u00a0<\/em>(Picador USA, 1998),<em>\u00a0Shooting the Heart<\/em>\u00a0(Viking, 2004),\u00a0<em>Love<\/em>\u00a0<em>Is Both Wave and Particle<\/em>\u00a0(Roaring Brook, 2017),\u00a0<em>Sphyxia<\/em>\u00a0(Fomite, 2020),\u00a0<em>Walk the Dark<\/em>\u00a0(Regal, 2024), as well as a memoir,\u00a0<em>The Last Next Time<\/em>\u00a0(Irving Place Editions, 2013). His work has appeared in various periodicals, including\u00a0<em>Harper\u2019s, Epoch, The Quarterly, Story<\/em>, the\u00a0<em>Boston Globe Magazine<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Cornell Magazine<\/em>, and he has appeared on\u00a0<em>Voice of America<\/em>\u00a0as a Critic\u2019s Choice. He lives with his wife in Ithaca, New York.
