While she vividly remembers&nbsp;<em>not<\/em>&nbsp;being among the first to learn to read in kindergarten, she was quickly hooked by the annual young authors festival, when every kid in the school got to make their own book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In middle school, her family spent over a year in northern Ecuador. That year of homeschooling offered more time to write\u2014and more to write about. She\u2019s been trying to make sense of her experiences through stories ever since. She remains fascinated by the interplay between languages, the possibilities of translation, and the cultural expectations and beliefs underlying our words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amalia\u2019s short stories and flash&nbsp;fiction appear in&nbsp;<em>The Common<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Leon Literary Review, Necessary Fiction, Portland Review<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Cordella Magazine<\/em><em>, Saranac Review,<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Eleven, Eleven<\/em>, among other journals. She is the author of&nbsp;<em>Detours<\/em>, a sequence of linked flash fiction (winner of the&nbsp;&nbsp;2011 Burnside Review Fiction Chapbook Competition) and of&nbsp;<em>Best Laid Plans<\/em>, a comic novella set at Flagship U. Her poems have appeared in journals including&nbsp;<em>Cloudbank<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Southern Poetry Review<\/em>, and&nbsp;<em>Iowa Review<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amalia\u2019s published translations include two novels by Alicia Y\u00e1nez Coss\u00edo (Ecuador),&nbsp;<em>The Potbellied Virgin<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Beyond the Islands<\/em>, and two by Ang\u00e9lica Gorodischer (Argentina),&nbsp;<em>Trafalgar&nbsp;<\/em>and&nbsp;<em>Jaguars\u2019 Tomb<\/em><em>. Jaguars\u2019 Tomb<\/em>, supported by an NEA Translation Fellowship,was awarded the Queen Sof\u00eda Spanish Institute 2022 Translation Prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amalia studied at Michigan State University (BA) and Cornell University (MA, PhD).\u00a0A professor emerita of Spanish at the University of Oregon, Amalia lives with her family in Eugene, where she enjoys\u00a0hiking, baking, jigsaw puzzles, and time with her cats.
